Integrated Reconstruction of Late Quaternary Geomorphology and Sediment Dynamics of Prokljan Lake and Krka River Estuary, Croatia

The upper part of the Krka River estuary and Prokljan Lake are a specific example well-stratified estuarine environment in submerged river canyon. Here, we reconstructed geomorphological evolution area classified data gathered study, integrating multibeam echosounder data, backscatter side-scan sonar morpho-bathymetric surveys, acoustic sub-bottom profiling, with addition ground-truthing sediment analyses. This led to successful classification bottom sediments using object-based image analysis method. Additional inputs improved segmentation seafloor classification, geology, morphology surveyed area. study uncovered precisely defined distinct features, specifically tufa barriers carbonate mounds active during Holocene warm periods, analogous recent that still exist grow upstream River. Fine-grained sediments, as hold more organic carbon than coarse-grained sampled on barriers. A good correlation silt allowed construction prediction map for marine sedimentary this estuarine/lake data. Our findings highlight importance additional achieve most accurate results.
